One person is dead after a fatal crash late Tuesday night in Dededo.

It happened just before midnight near the intersection of Macheche Road in front of the American Grocery store.

Guam Police Department spokesman Sgt. Paul Tapao says that the driver was northbound on Route 1 when he lost control and struck a concrete power pole.

He was taken to Guam Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. He was the only occupant of the vehicle. His identity has not been released.

Guam Fire Department spokeswoman Cherika Chargualaf said the 911 call came in around 11:45 p.m. reporting an accident with major injuries. Chargualaf said emergency personnel were on the scene around five minutes later.

Police closed down one lane in the area as they worked to investigate and clear up the crash site.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

This was the fourth fatal traffic crash on island roads this year.
