Guam- Considered today’s top runner on Guam, Derek Mandell has made a name for himself within these past five years by accumulating gold medals and breaking local records.
Mandell’s first accomplishment was winning the 2003 cross country championship in high school. He went on to compete in the 2006 and 2010 Micronesian Games to win a combined seven gold medals. Mandell currently holds the record for the 800m and 1500m events in the Micro Games and also holds the Guam record for the half marathon at 1:12:34.
In 2008, the runner got the chance to represent Guam in the Beijing Olympic Games and he won the Guam Ko’Ko’ Road Race Half Marathon last year.
