The two inmates who escaped from the Department of Corrections Mangilao compound have been arrested and charged.
According to the Guam Police Department, detectives assigned to GPD’s Criminal Investigation Division have arrested 44-year-old Johnny Borja Atalig and 44-year-old Johnnie Gene Del Rosario.
The two have been charged with felony escape and conspiracy. Del Rosario was also charged for promoting prison contraband.
Both men were booked and confined and the case has been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General for prosecution.
According to GPD, the two escapees self-surrendered Thursday morning.
Department of Corrections personnel and GPD’s SWAT coordinated to take the individuals into custody at an undisclosed location.
“I have asked GPD to conduct the internal affairs investigation to ensure it is done as quickly and as independently as possible,” said DOC Director Samantha Brennan. “I have assured the Governor that once this investigation is complete, all responsible persons will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
In a statement, GPD Chief of Police Stephen Ignaciao said: “I would like to thank the hard-working men and women from the Department of Corrections and the Guam Police Department for their continued dedication. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our community. I want to warn those prisoners or detainees who may want to try this … if you escape, we will come for you and we will find you.”
