Guam –  The Guam Basketball Confederation (GBC) has 2 teams in the championship round of the AAFB March Madness Tournament.

The men’s and women’s teams, sponsored by Miller Lite, and playing as Team ISLA, have played well representing Guam’s National program and will both be playing in the championship round this weekend at Andersen Air force Base.

The men’s squad will take on The Andersen Bombers at 8pm in Championship Game of the double-elimination tournament, while both teams are still unbeaten in the playoffs. The men’s team are currently 6 – 1 overall, suffering their only loss to The Bombers by 1 point in pool play. According to men’s team head coach, EJ Calvo, “We’ve played extremely well so far given the limited preparation and practice time. We have a deep roster of Guam’s best talent, and will do our best to win this tournament and take the title from The Bombers.”

The women’s team is undefeated, and has already won their 1st Championship Game; therefore, they are one win away from taking the title. The women’s squad is head coached by Tony Thompson, who selected the team from recent workouts. “We have played tough, as we are usually undersized. This outing has presented a bright future for Guam women’s basketball!”

The Guam National Basketball Teams are organized and managed by the Guam Basketball Confederation (GBC). GBC oversees development of the sport and National Programs from 6 years of age to the adult level in regards to international representation of the island. GBC is also the only recognized organization to represent and compete internationally in FIBA. FIBA is the Federal International Basketball Association which is the governing body for world basketball.
