GPD officers who responded to the scene five years ago testified during Wednesday's resumption of the Mark Torre Jr. trial.

The trial in the shooting death of police officer Elbert Piolo resumed Wednesday morning, with testimony from two GPD officers who responded to the scene five years ago.

It took GPD officer Joseph Ecalani 18 minutes to arrive at the home of Mark Torre Jr. in Yigo. Officer Ecalani testified in court that initially the reported location of the scene was Dededo. Responding officers had to be redirected to the Torre residence. When Officer Ecalani made it to the scene, he said the first thing he saw was Elbert Piolo in the arms of Torre.

“There was a thought that both Mark Torre Jr. and Sgt Piolo were both victims. We did not know at the time who the suspect was. I noticed Torre Jr. was holding Bert in his arms. Bert was faced towards Mark Torre Jr. … shirtless, I observed what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the right side of his chest, a little bit below the armpit,” Ecalani said.

Ecalani also described the scene for jurors — from the blood on the ground coming from the truck area to an expended bullet on the passenger seat.

Crime scene investigator Officer Mondia also testified about the blood and gun residue and other samples collected at the scene.

Torre is standing trial for negligent homicide and aggravated assault. His trial will continue tomorrow.
