Guam- The Budweiser Fall Classic has determined it’s final two clubs and, like the semifinals, the final match will feature the old and the new.
In the first semifinal match, newbie team Cars Plus FC advanced to the final by defeating the soccer powerhouse Quality Distributors. It wasn’t an easy feat by any means. The leagues leading scorer Scott Spindel put QD up 1-0 40 minutes into the match and strong defensive plays by both teams kept each other out of the net but in the 87th minute Allan Angoco tied the match.
The match would go into extra time and at the 107th minute Cars Plus’ Jonathan Romero would find the back of the net and the last goal of the match. Cars Plus upset QD 2-1 after extra time and are now one game away from the team’s first title in the team’s first competition.
The second semifinal match of the day featured the proven Guam Shipyard and the newly formed FC Guahan giving Shipyard a run for their money.
Guahan scored first off the foot of Darren Smart who scored 24 minutes into the match. After about the same amount of time Jason Cunliffe equalized the match. In the 70th minute Jay Benton gave Shipyard their first lead of the match, but Smart wasn’t done. In the 75th minute, Smart booted his second goal of the match to give Guahan hope. In the 85th minute Chris Santos found the back of the net to give Shipyard the lead and ultimately, the win.
The showdown between Cars Plus and Guam Shipyard is this Sunday, Oct. 10 at the GFA Soccer fields in Harmon. The final match starts at 7:30pm.
