Friars and Islanders Kick Off Football Postseason

Guam- The Interscholatic Interdependant Athletic Association’s high school football league will start eliminating teams tonight. The Father Duenas Friars and the John F. Kennedy Islanders will kick off the playoffs tonight.

Both the Friars and the Islanders finished the season at 3-3. The Friars were the winners in the season’s match up between the two teams but both teams are coming off of losses. JFK’s Coach Gerard Lujan said that they’ve been practicing for the Friars and, hopefully, learned from that loss. “We’ve practiced for them and hopefully we’ll produce tonight and hopefully it’s a good outcome. They got us the last game and hopefully we learned from it. They came out really strong and had minor mistakes. We had major mistakes and hopefully we don’t commit those mistakes tonight,” Lujan said.

JFK lost to the Guam High Panthers last week and the Friars lost to the Simon Sanchez Sharks. According to Friars Assistant Coach Keone Badua, they want to make up for last week’s poor performance. “We’re hoping to bounce back from last week’s poor performance and hope to put our best foot forward tonight… We’re not banking on the fact that they are the same team. Everyone has improved during the course of the season and we’re expecting a much tougher fight tonight. We’re focusing on tonight and we have to take care of tonight or there is no Guam High next week,” Badua said.

The game starts at 7:00pm tonight at Okkodo High School.

On Saturday the Southern High Dolphins will face the Simon Sanchez Sharks at Okkodo at 3:00pm and Okkodo High Bulldogs will travel to GW to face the Geckos at 7:00pm. The Guam High Panthers finished the season undefeated and the top spot gives them a semifinal berth. The winner of the Friars Islanders game will face the Panthers in the semis.
