Guam- The Guam High Panthers football team are on the path to making school history in more ways than one.
After defeating the John F. Kennedy Islanders 28-0 this past Saturday at Okkodo, the Panthers have finished the regular season undefeated at 6-0 and are the number one ranked team in the league. This is the first time Guam High has had a number one ranked team in any high school league since joining the Interscholastic Interdependent Athletic Association of Guam a year after the inception of the DODEA school system. And the way the Panthers football program is playing, they are on the verge of claiming the school’s first high school sports title. But with every team making the playoffs, every team still has a shot at the title, as long as they don’t go against the Panthers in the single elimination playoffs.
Throughout the season the Panthers have exhibited simple but well excecuted plays on both offense and defense. Plus, you can tell just by watching them, that this group of guys are more than just teammates, they’re friends, which shows on the field by how well the play with each other.
Panthers’ running back Tegan Brown finished the day with 73 yards and a touchdown. Head Coach Billy Henry contributes the success of his team to the fact they’re playing flawless and that he has a good batch of kids under his wing.
“My team truly played flawless… I’m very proud of these kids, they’ve come together as a team… they build one another up when one is down… it truly personifies what we are trying to teach our kids, which is play as a team, and that’s the reason why I believe we are first place this year,” Henry said.
Should the Panthers claim the title, this would be the second consecutive football season a team has won without a loss. Last year, the George Washington Geckos won the title without a loss. The high school football league will have the quarterfinals this Friday and Saturday.
