Guam- The George Washington Geckos girl’s volleyball team did it again.
In the first rematch of last year’s finals the Geckos defeated the Guam High Panthers in straight sets 25-12, 25-12. The second was a pretty quick one. The Panthers jumped ahead in the beginning but a 5 point rally that came mostly with kills in the middle and a couple of outside hits put the Geckos in the lead. A Panthers side out would end the rally but most of their points would then come from Gecko errors. Kara Guerrero, who played for the Panthers last season, was the strong force in the middle for the Geckos. Guerrero’s powerful kills greatly contributed to an offense the Panthers couldn’t contain.
The last time these two teams played each other, it was for the high school girl’s volleyball title which the Geckos won 25-9, 25-15. The Panthers’ second place finish was the highest for the team since the school’s inception into the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam sporting league.
The Geckos are now 3-0 along with the Academy Cougars and the Simon Sanchez Sharks. This Friday the Cougars will travel to G.W. for the battle to stay unbeaten.
