2010 Ko’Ko’ Road Race Set For Oct.

Guam- The Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB) today introduced its title sponsor, adidas Japan, to the island’s media and running community at the Pacific Islands Club. Mr. Kentaro Kawai, adidas Japan Group Manager, Brand/ Running/ Tennis marketing, and sport performance announced that adidas Japan plans to launch a series of Ekiden relay races in Japan with the championship race to be held at the 2011 Guam Ko’Ko’ Road Race.

Team adidas “BE FASTER” ekiden relay team will participate in the October 17, 2010 event, consisting of adidas Sports Muse Japanese model SHIHO, founding member of the adidas running republic Kei Shimizu, World Athletic Championship marathon silver medalist Ari Ichihashi and adidas running advisor Taro Agui.

“This is an exciting announcement for us, not only because the Guam Ko’Ko’ Road Race is a signature event with a lot of support from Japan, but also because it marks the first partnership between GVB and adidas Japan,” said GVB Deputy General Manager Ernie A. Galito. “With this sponsorship and participation from Japanese celebrities, we believe this year’s event will be bigger and more exciting than ever.”

GVB also introduced the 2010 Guam Ko’Ko’ Road Race major sponsors including Continental Airlines, Pacific Islands Club, Gatorade, KUAM AM-FM-TV, Pacific Daily News, and Citibank. Continental Airlines is the official airlines for the event and the official hotel is Pacific Islands Club.

GVB also announced that Gatorade will award $5,000 total prize money to the top finishers in both events. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd finishers overall for both the male and female divisions in the half marathon event, will be awarded $1,000, $500 and $250 respectively. The 1st place team overall in the Ekiden Relay event will be awarded $1,000. In 2009, more than 1,000 total runners participated in the event, over 400 of which were from Japan. Projections indicate more than 1,000 runners from Japan will compete in the 2010 event.
