Guam – The AK Islanders’ Miller Santos was perfect at the plate and John Pangelinan’s arm produced 6 strikeouts to help the Islanders take a 1-0 lead over the Moylan’s ODC Braves in the best of seven championship Budweiser Baseball series.
In the third inning, tied at 1 a piece, Dominic Cruz chops one into left center where he gets the ball to roll all the way to the Bud Light sign and that hit would be good for an RBI double. Jimmy Reyes is next at the plate and Cruz advances to third on a bunt attempt. The ump says he was never tagged and Cruz remains on third. After Reyes gets on base Miller Santos smacks the rock into the open field to bring in Cruz to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
Chad Palomo is next up to bat and sends one deep into right center. Right fielder makes a courageous attempt at the out but the ball actually falls into the center fielders glove but he can’t hang on to the ball and Palomo would get credited for a 2 RBI double to make it a 5-1 game.
That’s the last time anyone would cross homeplate for the Islanders and the defending champs would start to chip away at that lead and give the Islanders a big scare but would fall one run short at the end of the game and AK narrowly takes game 1 witha 5-4 final score.
Santos was 3-3 with a run and 2 RBIs, Dominic Cruz went 1-4 with a run and a ribi and Pat alvarez was 2-4 with 2 runs. John Pangelinan sat down six and got the win on the mound. Paul Lujan got the loss with no strikeouts.
Game 2 for the Budweiser baseball league championship is this Friday. Game starts at 7 at the Paseo Stadium.
