Guam – Players and officials have begun arriving into Guam for the first round of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, Group 2 in the Asia/Oceania zone, featuring Pacific Oceania against Thailand.
The Davis Cup by PNB Paribas is the premier international team event in men’s tennis, and has always attracted the world’s leading male players. In this weekend’s matches, Danai Udomchoke of Thailand, is the highest ranked at number 311 in the world.
According to Oceania Tennis Federation’s Executive Officer, Patrick O’Rourke, “this tie will be only the fourth time that the Davis Cup had been played in the Pacific, and the first time to the North Pacific.”
The Draw Ceremony, where the order of play for the matches is drawn at random, will be held on Thursday noon at Hilton. Opening Ceremonies will be held on Friday at 9:45am, and the first matches will follow at 10am. Second day matches begin at 1pm on Saturday, and Last day matches will begin at 10am.
Bill Camacho, president of the Guam National Tennis Federation, is pleased with the local community’s support of this event. In addition to major corporate sponsorships, many of our island tennis enthusiasts and high school students have volunteered to officiate in the games. He encourages everyone to come and watch high level tennis action.
