Guam – This is the Father Duenas Friars’ fifth visit to the finals in eight seasons and their third straight title match. For the Southern High Dolphins, this was their first.
It was a hard fought battle for both teams and a championship match that lived up to its hype.
The Friars finished the regular season undefeated and the Southern High Dolphins were looking to redeem a 3-0 loss to the Friars in the regular season.
After the Friars took a 1-0 lead in the 13 minute, Patrick Sotto scored his first of two goals in the 55th minute when he popped the rock over a charging goalie and the qeometry was perfect.
7 minutes later the Dolphins would get into the match. Nick Roberto would angle a superb shot to the far upright bar and make it a 2-1 match and keep the Dolphins hopes alive.
But the Friars would bring that lead back up to two, five minutes Jordan Gregory puts his head to good use and head butts the ball into the net for a 3-1 lead but that was very short lived. In the same minute Southern High would cut that lead back to one when the Friars goalkeper makes a fabulous save but Eddie Lorenzo is all up in his face and toes the ball in making it a 3-2 match.
Sotto would get his second goal of the match in the 75 minute in almost the same spot as the first this time he puts more juice and owned the goalie with the final shot for the Friars.
The Dolphins got their final score of the game when Christian Surber is at the right spot after another great save from the keeper. But time would run out for the Dolphins and the Friars would hold on to become the 2011 high school boy’s soccer champions.
Sotto lead the Friars with two goals in the match.
