Guam – Tuesday nights game matched up Team Guahan Soldier (0-1) and Agat Cardinals (1-1). A matchup loaded with friendly rivalries as many of the players on both teams played for the 76 Cougars in the BBL. It wouldn’t disappoint with a close game all night and several late inning lead changes.
Agat took an early lead in the first off ignited by a lead off triple by Jarred Alerta. Team Guahan Soldier would tie it up in the bottom of the 5th at one all thanks to a triple by Andrew Benavente. Agat would answer in the bottom half of the 5th with a run of their own to take the lead back 2-1. Team Guahan Soldiers would then come right back in the top half of the 6th inning with two runs to take the lead 3-2.
But the Cardinals wouldn’t go away and started the bottom of the 7th with three straight singles from Patrick Sablan, TJ Sarmiento and a run tying single from Jesse Alerta. The Soldiers would get 2 outs on a strikeout and ground out to try and push the game to extra innings. But it wasn’t meant to be as Cardinals’ Ricky Arce hit a roller to third baseman whose throw home to get the runner pulled catcher Roman Aguero off the plate and allowed TJ Sarmiento to slide in for the winning run.
Cardinals come out on top of a wild one 4-3.
The Cardinal’s Patrick Sablan finished the night 3 for 4 with 2 runs and Team Guahan Soldier’s Gerald Santos was 2 for 4 with a stole base and run scored. Winning pitcher was Jorge Pecina who closed out the last two innings allowing no runs and striking out.
