Mendiola, Rolinski Surf To Victory

207

(Barrigada, Guam –– Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011) Monster Energy Drinkʼs “Surf The Basin III” surfing and body-boarding competition concluded successfully Saturday, Dec. 10 at Hagatna Boat Basin, despite a day of unpredictable weather that saw intermittent rain showers and sunshine.  More than 40 contestants registered to compete in the Juniorsʼ Open Surfing, Longboard Open Surfing,  Body Boarding and Surfing (shortboard) categories.

The early morning heats were competed in wave conditions of three to four feet, with the occasional five-foot sets. As the day progressed toward noon, the ocean degenerated to small, choppy waves. By the mid-afternoon, wave sizes picked up again to between three and four feet but not at optimal conditions. Those who were able to ride the less than ideal wave conditions showed their mastery of the sport.

In the Juniorsʼ Open Surfing, Chad Cruz took first place; Jared Gogue placed second and Joshua Gogue came in third. In Long Board surfing, Fred Mendiola, who represented Guam long board surfing at the recent Pacific Games in New Caledonia, came in first, followed by Joeito Santiago in second place, and Kiko Santos in third place. Derrick Ikehara came in fourth place.  Santiago showed his “ironman” surfing abilities by entering in three categories.

In Surfing (shortboard), Mendiola also took the first place with fellow Pacific Games 2011 Team Guam surf athlete, Cheyne Purcell coming in second, and Santiago taking the third position.  Ikehara also placed fourth in this category. In Body-Boarding, B.J. Rolinski maintained his dominance in this category with his first place win; Carl Dela Cruz placed second and John Barber came in third, with Joeito Santiago in fourth position.

In addition to presenter sponsor, Monster Energy Drink, the event was also supported by DNA Evolution, Fokai Industries, PROA restaurant, Lotus Surf Shop, and Primo Surf.

Guahan Napu Inc.ʼs president, Willi Byerly, said the next surfing competition will be the Rickʼs Reef Classic V event at the Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort on Feb. 18, 2012.
