Jr.’s Next In Shirley Memorial

Guam – Junior tennis players take center stage in week three of the Shirley Lai Memorial Cup Tennis Tournament.  Several top junior players from Saipan will also be arriving this weekend to give Guam players some competition in the Girls’ 14U, 16U and 18U divisions.  At stake is not only the coveted division champion trophies but also valuable points in the USTA junior ranking system.

Looking back at last weekend’s results, number one seeded Open Mixed Doubles team of Wendell Roden and Vivian Lee dug out of an early 1-4 deficit  to win the first set 6-4, and ultimately 7-6(5) in the second set to capture the division over brother-sister duo Marten and Katie Lai in a very closely contested match up.

Jeff Bristol battled through exhaustion and the brutal heat to capture the Men’s 55+ singles over Jan Rudolph 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-2.  According to Bill Camacho, tournament director, it was his fifth and final match over three days.

While there were some rain delays, for the most part, the weather cooperated.  Players battled the heat as much as their opponents, noted Camacho, but all pulled through, giving their best.
