Guam – The 2011 Shirley Lai Memorial Cup continues this weekend at the Ninete Tennis Center. This weekend’s events will be the Adult Age Men and Women Singles and Combo Mixed Doubles. Organizers are hoping for more of the sunny weather experienced in last weekend’s matches.
Recapping last week’s results:
In the Open Men’s Doubles division, Bill Camacho and Marten Lai prevailed in a three set match to win against Torgun Smith and John Crouse. The heat on the courts matched the heat from the noon day sun as both teams battled to stay ahead. Camacho and Lai initially led early in the first set, but lost. In the second set, they converted a service break to win. Finally in the last set, Camacho and Lai started with a quick 3 game lead and finished strong to close the match. Final score 5-7, 7-5, 6-3.
In the Open Women’s Doubles division, Katie Lai teamed up with Saipan player Vivian Lee to defeat Amber and Chloe Gadsden in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Over at the Men’s 4.5 Doubles division, George Lai and Eun Jung Sang defeated Sam Lai and David Lai in an intense four hour match which saw both teams jockeying for that elusive two point lead. Final score 7-6(9-7), 6-7(12-14), 10-8.
According to Bill Camacho, tournament director, 66 doubles teams signed up for the weekend, with the Men’s 4.5 and Women’s 4.0 registering the most entries, 6 teams each.
The Shirley Lai Memorial Cup is previously known as the Shirley’s Open. The name was changed to honor the memory of Shirley Lai, founder of Shirley’s Coffee Shop who passed away last year.
