Guam – The Guam Rugby Football Union is planning to nominate both Men’s and Women’s Rugby Sevens Team to compete in the 2011 Pacific Games in New Caledonia in August 2011 and interested players are invited participate in this weekend’s True Grit Rugby Tournament at Wettengal Field on Saturday and Sunday, according to GRFU President Stephen Grantham.
“Players interested in playing at the Pacific Games must either have been born on island or have lived here for at least five years and have played rugby before,” Grantham said. This tournament will allow the GRFU to identify interested players who have the necessary fitness, ability and motivation to represent Guam.
“The final roster will be submitted to the GNOC for consideration after the tournament and those selected must commit to an intensive training program to get into playing condition for New Caledonia where they will meet players from three of the world’s top rugby sevens playing nations – Fiji, Samoa and Tonga,” Grantham said.
“Guam Rugby players have shown over the last two years that they have the ability to compete at this level. We want to continue to show Guam that rugby is a sport at which we can be internationally competitive,” he went to say.
The True GRIT International Rugby Tournament is Saturday and Sunday, February 12th and 13th, at the Wettengel Rugby Field in Dededo. The first match is scheduled to start at 10:00am.
