Guam – Despite a good first half, Guam lost their fourth match of the 2012 AFC Under-16 Championship Qualifiers 10-0 to Australia last night. By sticking to their marked men, Guam shut down many of Australia’s attempts on goal and held the Joeys to a single first-half goal from Lukas Stergiou. This did not sit well for Australia, who are tied for second place in Group G with Indonesia.
The tide began to change at the start of the second half when Australia put in first-stringers Taylor Tombides and Joshua MacDonald. Between the two, they scored eight of the nine goals scored in the second half – Kevin Ly adding the other – as Australia ended the game with a 10-0 win.
In other matches, Thailand beat Indonesia 4-1 and Myanmar slipped past Hong Kong with a 4-2 win. Based on these results, Thailand is remains top of Group G with a 4-0 record, while Indonesia and Australia trail close behind at 3-1. Myanmar and Hong Kong are both 1-3 and Guam is at the bottom of the group with four losses. The top two teams from each of the seven groups plus the two best third-place teams advance to the next round.
With the loss, Guam is unable to advance but will try to end on a high note on Thursday night when they take on Myanmar. Kickoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. Guam time.
