Guam – Guam’s junior players posted a strong showing in the Quality Cup 2014 tennis tournament Skill Singles events, upsetting older, more experienced seeded players at the tournament’s three venues – the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa tennis courts, the Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort tennis courts and the Rick Ninete Tennis Center in Hagåtña.

In an early morning match at the Sheraton, 12-year-old Harvest Christian Academy student Gabriel Tan came back from a set down to defeat No. 1 seed Jose Gallego in the Men’s 4.0 Singles division 3-6, 6-1, 10-6 to start off a series of similar upsets during the day. Tan’s doubles partner, Mason Caldwell, also won a three-setter in the Men’s 4.0 Singles division, defeating Jeff Demarino, 6-0, 4-6, 12-10. Caldwell later defeated Tan 6-0, 6-3 in their subsequent quarterfinal match up in the division. Caldwell will next face Vicente Acencio in the semifinals.
In the bottom half of the Men’s 4.0 division, No. 2 Ricardo Estella, a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Alvin Lopez, will face No. 3 Jesse Tano, a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Rinkou Aki, in the other semifinal.

In the Men’s 4.5 Singles, No. 2 Raymond Miranda defeated his younger opponent, Edward Chung 6-0, 6-2 and will face No. 3 Derek Okuhama in the semifinals. Okuhama defeated Mark Joseph Burgos 6-2, 6-4. No. 1 Khay Sung also stayed alive for the semifinals after defeating Jeff Demarino 6-2, 6-4.
In the Men’s Open Singles, No. 3 Charles Oliver faltered in his Round of 16 match, losing 6-4, 6-3 to junior player Andrew Chung. Oliver, a former Guam No. 1 player, was playing his first local tournament after returning to the island in August last year.

“The kids are fearless,” Oliver said after his match. “(Chung) played a smart match and to be honest, I wasn’t prepared for that. You can tell the court rust is there and a lack of consistency on my part.
“My drive to win is still there, but the execution is not there yet,” added Oliver, who plans to try out for the Guam national tennis team later this month for the upcoming 2014 Micronesian Games.
Micronesian Games tennis head coach Torgun Smith spent most of the day at each of the three venues observing players in both the Men’s and Women’s Open Singles divisions who plan to try out for the team. More information about the national team tryouts will be disseminated soon, Smith said.

In the Men’s Open quarterfinals, No. 1 Chris Cajigan defeated Kevin Wang 6-3, 6-4 and will next face No. 4 Joshua Cepeda, who defeated Joseph Cruz 7-6, 3-6, 10-8.
In the bottom half of the draw, Brian Tuncap, Jr., a 6-4, 7-5 winner over Chung, will face No. 2 Wendell Roden, who defeated Tuncap’s brother Victor 6-3, 6-2.

On the women’s side, Charlayne Espinosa advanced to the semifinals of the Women’s Open division with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Margaux San Nicolas. In the Women’s 4.0 division, Emmanuelle Haurillon defeated Alyssa Bristol 6-1, 6-2 to gain a one-match lead in the round-robin formatted division. In the Women’s 3.0 division, No. 1 Kanasta Abrams is set to face Mimi Gaffney, who defeated Ellen Uy 6-4, 6-4. Millie Leon Guerrero, who upset No. 2 Ashley Nadler 7-5, 6-2, will play in the division’s other semifinal against Tess Suh, who defeated Caylin Hubble 6-3, 6-1.

In the Women’s 2.0 division, No. 1 Alyssa Merletti is set to face Kaia Malakooti, a 4-6, 6-4, 13-11 winner over Andrea Delin. Tara Usita-Lee upset No. 2 Victoria Smith 6-1, 6-3 and will face Gabby Camacho in the semifinals. Camacho defeated Jane Baik, 6-2, 6-4.
