Guam – The Guam Department of Education and the Foundation for Public Education announced today the six finalists for the 2016 Teacher of the Year.

Every year, teachers are nominated by parents, students, fellow teachers, or administrators for Teacher of the Year. GDOE Deputy Superintendent Erika Cruz says that this year, they received 67 nominations and 21 candidates who accepted the nominations. After a panel of judges conducted interviews and evaluated the teachers, the list is now down to six Teacher of the Year semi-finalists, two from each grade level. The semi-finalists are Graziella Griffin from GW High, Leonora Balajadia from Okkodo High, Gracelle Canar from UPI Elementary, Dr. Rochelle Diaz from Maria Ulloa Elementary, Richard Velasco from FBLG Middle and Patricia Abub also from FBLG Middle.

Fernandez says, “If we’re going to support excellent teaching then we need to recognize those of you who put in that effort every day, who come to school dedicated to students and you do your very best to make sure that when they leave your classrooms they have the knowledge and skills to move on successfully in our schools system and I thank you for that.”

2015 GDOE Teacher of the Year Melanie Blas explains, “We do have some wonderful teachers and we only have one prize for Teacher of the Year but we have wonderful teachers. I’ve seen them. I’m proud to be a teacher at the Guam Department of Education.”
