Guam – Soccer fans are set for a treat this weekend as 14 teams from the public and private middle school soccer leagues are slated to participate in the 4th Annual GFA Middle School Girls Soccer Festival.
The F.B. Leon Guerrero Hawks – champions of the Guam Department of Education Middle School Girls’ Soccer League – and the San Vicente Braves – winners of the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam Middle School Girls’ Soccer League – will feature in the championship match at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.
The undefeated Hawks, winners of the first two festivals, will look to add a third win to keep the title with the public school league. The Braves, though also undefeated, will have a tough task as all three previous tournaments were won by a public school, festival coordinator Grace Martinez said. The Oceanview Knights won last year’s edition.
The second-placed teams in both leagues, the Mt. Carmel Phoenix and Agueda Johnston Pirates, will face off at 6:30 p.m. while the Bishop Baumgartner Obispos and Vincent S.A. Benavente Roadrunners – third place finishers in their respective leagues – will precede them at 5:30 p.m. There is also room for the 4th place finishers in both leagues to lock horns as the St. John’s Knights play the Oceanview Knights at 4:30 p.m. All matches will take place on GFA Field 1, GFA’s new artificial turf field.
In addition, there are three exhibition matches, starting with the Santa Barbara Spartans and the Jose Rios Voyagers at 4:30 p.m. on GFA Field 2 (natural grass field). The Andersen Dragons and Inarajan Warriors will follow in the 5:30 p.m. match and the exhibition matches will finish when the Harvest Christian Academy Eagles play the Untalan Wildcats at 6:30 p.m.
Admission to the festival is free and there will be an awards ceremony after the final match.
