VIDEO: With Surge in Strep Throat, Public Health Urges Clinics To Report Any Cases of Rheumatic Fever


Guam- The Public Health Department is raising concerns over the higher amount of strep throat cases being reported. Despite claims from one physician, the agency is puzzled it doesn’t have any confirmed reports of rheumatic fever, which is often a complication of acute strep throat.


Public health is asking the community to see a doctor immediately if anyone shows signs or symptoms of strep throat or rheumatic fever.

Symptoms of Strep throat include:
•Sore throat /pain when swallowing (without cold symptoms such as runny nose, stuffy nose, sneezing, etc.)
•Swollen tonsils with white or yellowish spots in the back of the throat
•Swollen lymph glands in the neck
•Younger children may also complain of abdominal pain

Symptoms of Rheumatic Fever (following Strep throat) include:

•Heart Inflammation
•High Fever
•Severe Joint Pain
