Dr. Mike Cruz, the governor’s chief medical adviser, on Wednesday, denied Speaker Tina Muna Barnes’ appeal that GovGuam buys the same test kits that the CNMI got from South Korea.

In his letter to the Speaker, Dr. Cruz pointed out that the test kits sought by the speaker have not yet been approved by the FDA.

Dr. Felix Cabrera, a member of the Physicians Advisory Group, said during the Governor’s afternoon internet news conference today that while it is clear that mass testing is essential to combating this virus, testing must be safe, accurate and reliable.

“Unfortunately, as recently as yesterday afternoon, my conversations with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration indicate that specific test kits alluded to in your letter have not yet received FDA approval for an emergency use authorization,” Dr. Cabrera said.

Dr. Cruz went on to say that Guam has gotten a commitment from Abbott Laboratories which is sending 200 of their ‘rapid’ FDA approved test kits which can produce results within minutes.
