The administration is ready to transfer $1.1 million for the upgrade of Simon Sanchez High School.
Guam Department of Education Superintendent Jon Fernandez has been seeking funding from the anticipated GovGuam surplus to address GDOE’s budget shortfall and to support the reconstruction of Simon Sanchez High School.
According to GDOE public information officer Isa Baza, GDOE’s budget has been cut by $15 million over the past two years.
But last Oct. 15, the governor sent a letter to Fernandez pledging the amount of $1.1 million for the next phase in the procurement for the reconstruction of Simon Sanchez High School.
The governor said this commitment was reiterated when she visited the school on that same day along with Fernandez.
“I write today, now, over a month later, to follow up on how GDOE would like to receive this money,” the governor wrote in her latest letter to Fernandez dated Dec. 3, 2019.
She added: “Like the students and parents of SSHS, I am eager to see progress and I am ready to make this transfer. Please let me know as soon as possible.”
