The administration is still confident in the leadership of the Department of Corrections despite the many problems exposed during last night’s oversight hearing.
Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero, in an interview with Patti Arroyo on NewsTalk K57, said she remains confident that DOC director Samantha Brennan can fix the problems at DOC.
“We haven’t discussed any emergency declaration. We have every confidence in DOC’s leadership and that that they can correct the problems,” the governor said.
She added that DOC has longstanding problems in funding, infrastructure, and staffing that can’t be solved overnight.
“I am confident in the skill of Sam Brennan. We have also detailed Joe Carbulido from GPD there. So I’m sure they can solve the problems,” the governor said.
She added that staffing and facilities remain problems and that Brennan is aggressively recruiting to fill in vacancies as officers leave for higher pay.
“Facilities and equipment are other problems. We need to upgrade and be up to standards in locking systems and other equipment,” the governor said.
