Airplane crashes into ocean after it overshoots runway in Chuuk


Guam – A plane crash has been reported near Chuuk this morning, confirms Federated States of Micronesia Department of Transportation Deputy Director Season Jacky.

The Air Niugini flight was headed to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea from Pohnpei but was making a stop to Chuuk when it overshot the runway and crashed in the water.

Jacky says all passengers and crew on board were evacuated and taken to a hospital in Chuuk. At this time, it is not known how many passengers were on board at the time of the reported crash.

This particular route the Air Niugini flight was one is taken once a week, taking off from Pohnpei, stopping over in Chuuk and heading for Port Moresby.

Representatives from the FSM Department of Transportation are currently at the Chuuk Airport to assess the situation and perform an investigation.
