It’s not just the Manhattan Project Beer Company, which has a beer product named after Bikini Atoll, one of the well-known nuclear testing sites in the Pacific.
A Connecticut-based brewery named Evil Twin Brewing has a beer product called “Bikini” which unabashedly describes its beer as “named after atom bomb test grounds, designed by a French car engineer.”
The Republic of the Marshall Islands government has already protested the Manhattan Project Beer Company’s Bikini Atoll beer.
In an official release, the RMI National Nuclear Commission says: “The anger of the Marshallese people is understandable. This is just another example of an American entity profiting from the appropriation of names and places that do not belong to them … Bikini is not a beer, a bathing suit, or the home of Spongebob Squarepants. It is the ancestral homelands of the Bikinian people who cannot reside there today because of lingering radiation from U.S. nuclear weapons tests conducted on the islands during the Cold War.”
So far, no protest has been expressed against Evil Twin Brewing’s “Bikini” beer whose marketing verbiage includes the following: “The bikini was to many a disturbing and degrading creation but fortunately for others a symbol of emancipation. ”
