Asmuyao Community School senior awarded with scholarship

“You just got to believe in yourself that you can do it,” – ACS Scholar Jade Alaysha Domingo.

Guam – The Rotarians of Tumon Bay celebrated this year’s scholarship recipient for Asmuyao Community School – Ms. Jade Alaysha Domingo who was the guest of honor at this afternoon’s Rotary Club meeting.

Domingo is currently a senior attending full time at Okkodo High School. She shares with PNC that her goal is to graduate in 2018 upon completion of her courses with ACS as well as fulfilling her full time obligations at Okkodo.

“[My family is] very proud and happy that ACS is helping me get where I want to go,” Domingo said. She added, “You just got to believe in yourself that you can do it, it’s really hard, but if you can believe that you can do it then you can do it yourself.”

Rotary guest speaker ACS Director Rand Coffman joined Domingo and her mother and spoke to Rotarians on how the community school has impacted students just like Jade.

“Asmuyao was created in 1972 by a group of university professors who wanted an alternative school for their own children,” explains Coffman. “So, we’re just celebrating 45 years of encouraging as many students as possible that need help picking up credits, advancing, and also the big news is that we just helped 8.4% of the DOE graduates from last year. Of the 2,058 grads, we helped 173 so we figure that comes to 8.4% so we’re really happy about engaging the community and helping the students graduate and lowering the dropout rate. That’s really encouraging for us.”
