An August trial date is still tentative for the people accused of healthcare fraud, pending the submission of over 260,000 pages of discovery.
Guam – Guam Medical Transport owners Clifford Shoemake, his son Nicholas Shoemake, and their business partner, Kimberly Casey Conner, were indicted on 44 counts of conspiracy and money laundering for allegedly falsifying Medicare claims. Thelma Joiner was later added to the case for obstruction of criminal investigations.
Over 260,000 of discovery in the Shoemake case is being prepared and organized by Behind the Gavel (BTG), a litigation support services provider. Although Atty. Louie Yanza says the company is on-target with its estimated delivery date of mid- to late-April, Atty. Colin Thompson, who represents Thelma Joiner, argues that having no access to the work product affects his ability to move forward with trial, adding that it would not be realistic for him to be prepared by August.
Judge Joaquin Manibusan has set a status hearing for after the documents are scheduled to be received from BTG so that Thompson can advise if the court can move forward with an August 29 trial date. The next status hearing is set for April 19 at 1:30 p.m.
