GVB vice president Bobby Alvarez said the barbecue event is an opportunity to bring the best of Guam culture into Tumon, the island’s primary tourist district.

There’s nothing that brings the island together for a good time and delicious food like the annual BBQ Block Party.

This GVB signature event closes San Vitores Road in Pleasure Island, between T Galleria by DFS and The Plaza Shopping Center, for a pedestrian-only event filled with Guam’s biggest BBQ competition, live entertainment, activities for the family, food and beverage vendors, shopping and more!

The event kicks off this Saturday July 6 from 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm. Visitors, residents, and military families are invited to attend this event, free of charge.

GVB vice president Bobby Alvarez said the barbecue event is an opportunity to bring the best of Guam culture into Tumon, the island’s primary tourist district.

“This is a great opportunity to share our culture to our tourists and to share who we are as a people,” Alvarez said.

“Food is a core part of our tradition as a people and as a culture and one of the ways we prepare food is by barbecuing, Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero said.

It’s all about food at the barbecue block party, and for this year’s barbecue competition hosted by the Micronesian Chefs Association, a total of eight participants will be competing for the title of Ultimate Grill Master Champion.

A total of $4,600 in prize money will be handed out to the top three teams in three meat categories — pork, chicken, and beef.

Meskla owner and chef Peter Duenas, a 3-time champion, said: “Well, you know, we’re out there working in the heat and the smoke. So it’s a very challenging event and there’s a lot of stress. But we are really into our food and barbecue is like a passion for most of us locals.”

Free samples will be provided during the competition by Guam Community College students who will also be competing. Team GCC Culinary Fire, led by Chef and culinary instructor Paul Kerner, took first place in the chicken category last year, and are ready to compete for the title again this year.

“We’ve briefed them to get them ready. They’re all very excited for the competition,” Kerner said.

The competition kicks off at 5:30 PM and participants are encouraged to witness the action. The presentation of the award will be at 9 p.m. and they’ll be announcing this year’s Ultimate Grill Master Champion, so don’t miss it!

GVB wants to remind the public that additional parking and free trolley rides will be provided every 20 minutes at Gov. Joseph Flores Beach Park.
