Back in June in 2021, Philips Respironics voluntarily recalled more than 15 million certain ventilators, bi-level positive airway pressure and continuous positive airway pressure, according to the AG.
The foam may degrade and release particles and toxic gasses into the machine’s airways that users may inhale or swallow.
These issues could potentially result in serious injury, which can be life-threatening, cause permanent impairment, and require medical intervention to prevent permanent injury to users.
The health risks include cancer, respiratory inflammation and other toxic effects. Other less serious side effects include headaches, nausea, irritation of the eyes, nose or skin
According to the OAG, AG Camacho contacted Philips in January 2022 for the recall which included all 50 states, the district of columbia, Puerto Rico, but not Guam and the rest of the Mariana Islands.
However, according to a press release, Philips had responded and clarified that the program extends to device users in all U.S. Territories–importantly, Guam–affected devices will be replaced at no cost and the replacement device will be shipped without charge.
Devices that are more than three years old or exposed to high heat or humid environments are more likely to have degraded foam.
