Bordallo Welcomes 10 Summer Interns From Guam

Guam – Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo welcomed 10 interns to her Washington, D.C. office this summer.

In a release, the Congresswoman says that she has provided internship opportunities to nearly 80 undergraduate students during her time in office. Many previous interns continue to be actively engaged in public service both in Guam and throughout the country.

The interns include: Sara Fitzpatrick, Thomas French, Shaneika Lai, Rachael Blaz, Parker Bettis, Mariana Dimla, Hannah Lam, and Dominique Rose Felix. Vincent Reyes is the 2012 University of Guam congressional intern and James Pangelinan is the first congressional intern from the Guam Community College.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – August 2, 2012 – Washington, D.C. –

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo welcomed 10 interns to her Washington, D.C. office this summer. The interns include: Sara Fitzpatrick, Thomas French, Shaneika Lai, Rachael Blaz, Parker Bettis, Mariana Dimla, Hannah Lam, and Dominique Rose Felix. Vincent Reyes is the 2012 University of Guam congressional intern and James Pangelinan is the first congressional intern from the Guam Community College. Sara, daughter of Kelly and Maria Fitzpatrick, is a 2010 graduate from Academy of Our Lady of Guam. Sara is an incoming junior at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and is majoring in Political Science with a minor in Psychology. Sara is a recipient of the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship, National Merit Scholarship, and the Swarthmore Writing Fellowship.

Thomas, son of Vice Admiral William French, Commander, Navy Installations Command, and Monika French, is a 2010 graduate from The Rock Academy in San Diego, California. Thomas is currently attending and playing football for Maranatha Bible Baptist College and is studying Business Management.

Shaneika, daughter of Richard and Irma Lai, is a 2010 graduate from Harvest Christian Academy.  Shaneika will be transferring from Seattle Pacific University to Chapman University in Orange County, California in the fall as a major in Film and Media Arts. Shaneika used her talents to create a video of the 2012 Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns honoring the 68th Anniversary of the Liberation of Guam and the Battle for the Northern Mariana Islands.

Rachael, daughter of Tom and Shelane Blaz of Fairfax, Virginia (and granddaughter of former Guam Congressman, Brig. Gen. Ben Blaz, USMC, Ret.), is the 2012 Valedictorian of Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax. Rachael will be studying Nursing at Auburn University in Alabama on a full ROTC Scholarship in the fall.

Parker, son of Leland and Melissa Bettis, is a 2010 graduate from North Canyon High School in Arizona. Parker is currently an incoming junior at Arizona State University and is studying Finance with a minor in Pre-Law.

Vincent, son of John and Maria Reyes, is a 2009 graduate from Father Duenas Memorial School. Vincent is a rising senior and will be attending Towson University in Maryland through the University of Guam’s study abroad program in the fall. Vincent was recommended to the Congresswoman by UOG President, Dr. Robert Underwood for this internship based on a faculty committee review.

James Pangelinan, son of James Pangelinan and Carmen Borja, is a 2010 Simon Sanchez High School Graduate. James is currently attending Guam Community College and studying Early Childhood Education. James was recommended to the Congresswoman by GCC President, Dr. Mary Okada, for this internship based on a faculty committee review.

Mariana, daughter of Patrick and Debbie Dimla, is a 2010 graduate from the Academy of Our Lady of Peace in San Diego. Mariana is an incoming junior at the University of San Diego, California and is majoring in Business Administration with a minor in Leadership. Mariana is also the 2011 Sons and Daughters of Guam Club Liberation Queen in San Diego.

Hannah Lam, daughter of Steve and Anna Lam, was the 2011 valedictorian of St. John’s School. Hannah is currently attending Harvard University and majoring in Linguistics.

Dominique Rose Felix, daughter of Chris and Rose Felix, is a 2009 graduate from the Academy of Our Lady of Guam. Dominique is a rising senior at Santa Clara University in California and is majoring in Economics and Communications.   

“These internships are an opportunity for a diverse group of college students to work for a Congressional office and learn more about the issues important to Guam,” said Congresswoman Bordallo. “Our summer interns contribute significantly to research and administrative tasks in my office and participate in events in Washington to commemorate the Liberation of Guam. I hope this educational experience helps to broaden their understanding of government and motivates them to improve their communities. Further, I am pleased to have had the opportunity to host the GCC and UOG interns. My staff and I thoroughly enjoyed having all of our summer interns and we wish them the best in completing their degrees and contributing to our island and our nation.”
