Brass knuckles, considered a deadly weapon, was found during a search of Tiyan High School this afternoon.
The Guam Department of Education initially reported a shelter-in place procedure at Tiyan High School at around 9:40 a.m.
GDOE public information officer Isa Baza said the shelter-in-place procedure was initiated while school officials were conducting a search of the campus.
According to Baza, school resource officers were deployed to assist the school administration and the all-clear would be announced once the search has been completed.
At about 12:45 p.m. the search was concluded and the all-clear was given.
According to Baza, Tiyan High School has been on high alert and monitoring the school environment to prevent against potential conflicts.
Through continued monitoring, Baza said GDOE officials were informed of the possible presence of contraband on campus on Thursday morning.
In an effort to be proactive, Baza said school administrators initiated a blanket search and the contraband was located which turned out to be brass knuckles.
Brass knuckles increase the amount of pressure per punch, can break bones with ease, tear open skin, cause internal injuries, and even kill.
Tiyan High School was the site of a recent public school riot, the second one to occur after an earlier one in JFK High School.
There’s still no confirmation on whether the brass knuckles were brought in by a student or not.
According to GDOE, the incident will be handled administratively.
