Guam – The search and rescue efforts for 15-year-old Xavier Akima has ended in tragedy as family members have confirmed that they have learned that Akima’s body was recovered this evening.
Akima went missing Saturday during a hike in San Carlos Falls when flash flooding and inclement weather separated him from a group of 9 minors.
Akima went missing Saturday night in the San Carlos Falls and swimming hole area while hiking with eight of his friends who were all minors. GFD says inclement weather and flash flooding contributed to the teen to being separated from the group.
According to GFD Acting Fire Chief Joey San Nicolas, the boys set out to hike the trail in San Carlos Falls but weather conditions changed rapidly which is not uncommon in the area. Even the most experienced hikers will have difficulty escaping hazardous conditions that happen quickly.
On their third day, rescuers located the boy’s bag near the bridge leading to Leo Palace Resort. From there, authorities concentrated their search efforts and found Akima’s body hours later.
This is a developing story. Check back later for more updates.
