A potential coronavirus case is currently being investigated by health authorities in Palau.

As of 5:30 pm, Mar 3, Tuesday there is one Person Under Investigation (PUI) at the Belau National Hospital who may be infected with COVID-19, according to information from the Palau Ministry of Health (MOH).

The patient is a 73-year old female visitor from Oregon State with underlying conditions. The patient came to Palau with a visiting medical team.

According to MOH, the patient has been isolated and is being monitored at the national hospital. Public health providers are also investigating other individuals who may have been exposed to the patient.

Following the detection of the potential COVID-19 case, MOH contacted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Tomorrow, samples from the patient will be sent to a CDC-approved laboratory and possibly to a testing facility in Taiwan, for COVID-19 confirmatory testing.

While awaiting the results, MOH is urging the Palau community to remain calm and to continue practicing preventive measures.
