Guam – Cancer survivors, caregivers and family members attended the Celebrate Life! Cancer Survivors Conference today [Friday] at the Westin Resort.
The conference is hosted by the Department of Public Health and the Guam Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition. Incoming Coalition Vice Chairwoman Renata Bordallo says it’s important that everyone celebrate survivorship as the cancer survivor population continues to grow on Guam.
“This is a chance for survivors to get together, support each other, get information about resources out there,” said Bordallo. “So, it’s important again to celebrate the theme of celebrate life.”
Breast cancer survivor Genedine Pangelinan Ybarra says she wasn’t going to attend the conference. However, at the request of Bordallo, she decided to conduct a presentation to explain her experience with stress, self care and spirituality. She mentions the best ways she coped with struggling through Stage 2 breast cancer and chemotherapy treatment was by praying to God, laughing and being happy. Ybarra states this formula resulted in her being cancer free for over 14 years.
“I noticed that if you’re sad all the time, you don’t like yourself,” said Ybarra. “You got to like yourself to go ahead and lift yourself above everything else. And if you can’t do it, the best person and the best anybody to go on and help you would be the man who created you. And that would God right? I didn’t try to promote it because I’m not really a very religious person, but every time I do ask him, something good happens.”
The Cancer Control Coalition is looking for new members to help with their efforts. For more information, call (671) 735-0670.
