Guam- Captain John Ward is now in charge of Naval Base Guam.

A Change of Command ceremony was held Thursday morning where Captain Richard Wood II was relieved of his duties as Commanding Officer after serving two memorable years on island. Wood will be leaving to Oregon State University to be a professor and the Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps.

“Never forget all we have to do” said Wood. “It sounds simple, but it’s a tough concept. All we have to do is lead sailors, point them in the right direction, and give them the support they need. They will get the job done.”

Captain Ward has only been on island for a couple weeks, but told local dignitaries and sailors that he and his family are enjoying their time overseas. Ward was the military special assistant for electronic warfare systems and operational test and evaluation director in Washington D.C..

“The past 2 weeks have been an eye opener” said Ward. “Learning how you run and manage a complex task of this place and management has been impressive. Your professionalism, dedication to service and commitment to excellence is impressive. And the caliber of sailors, civilians, and contractors now is tremendous.”

The ceremony was held at Naval Station’s Big Screen Theater.
