Classes begin for 23 GDOE schools on September 13

(Guam) – The Guam Department of Education (GDOE) would like to inform the community that classes will resume for 21 GDOE schools on Thursday, September 13, 2018. The schools that will open Thursday are the following:

***TWO ADDITIONAL SCHOOLS – ASTUMBO ELEMENTARY AND ASTUMBO MIDDLE SCHOOL – WILL OPEN, BRINGING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF SCHOOLS OPENING THURSDAY TO 23***

The Guam Department of Education informs the community that both Astumbo Elementary School and Astumbo Middle School will open on Thursday, September 13, 2018. A total of 23 GDOE schools will open doors to students tomorrow. The list of schools that will open includes the following:

  • Adacao Elementary School
  • Agana Heights Elementary School
  • Astumbo Elementary School
  • C.L. Taitano Elementary School
  • Chief Brodie Memorial Elementary School
  • Finegayan Elementary School
  • Juan M. Guerrero Elementary School
  • J.Q. San Miguel Elementary School
  • Liguan Elementary School
  • Maria Ulloa Elementary School
  • M.U. Lujan Elementary School
  • Machananao Elementary School
  • P.C. Lujan Elementary School
  • Tamuning Elementary School
  • Upi Elementary School
  • Wettengel Elementary School
  • Astumbo Middle School
  • F.B. Leon Guerrero Middle School
  • Jose Rios Middle School
  • Vicente Benavente Middle School
  • George Washington High School
  • John F. Kennedy High School
  • Tiyan High School

GDOE is working with the Guam Power Authority (GPA) to determine whether these schools will be powered, along with the Astumbo Gym, which is a Tier II shelter. 

An additional 18 schools will remain closed pending the resolution of issues including lack of power. The schools that will remain closed on Thursday are the following:

  • Daniel L. Perez Elementary School

  • Harry S. Truman Elementary School

  • Inarajan Elementary School

  • Lyndon B. Johnson Elementary School

  • Marcial Sablan Elementary School

  • Merizo Martyrs’ Memorial Elementary School

  • Ordot Chalan Pago Elementary School

  • Price Elementary School

  • Talofofo Elementary School

  • Agueda Johnston Middle School

  • Inarajan Middle School

  • Luis P. Untalan Middle School

  • Oceanview Middle School

  • J.P. Torres Success Academy

  • Okkodo High School

  • Simon Sanchez High School

  • Southern High School

 “Our administrators and staff have been working hard over the past two days to clean schools, clear debris, and prepare our campuses to welcome back our students,” GDOE Superintendent Jon Fernandez said. “In addition to recognizing our dedicated staff, I also want to thank our agency partners, including the Guam Power Authority and Guam Waterworks Authority, for working diligently to restore power and water at our schools. Thank you also to the Guam Fire Department recruits, who helped to clear debris from several schools on Wednesday,” Fernandez said.

GDOE will continue to work with agency partners to open remaining schools by Friday.
