The CNMI Public School System’s Commissioner of Education is up for renewal this year. The board of education convened on Saipan to discuss her contract.
Members of the CNMI Public School System Board of Education approved a timeline last week to review the performance of Commissioner of Education Rita Sablan. Sablan, who’s career with PSS spans 25 years, is up for renewal. “Today I am supposed to give them a presentation of my self assessment and some report on how the school is moving along and how the school district is moving along,” said CNMI PSS Commissioner of Education Rita A. Sablan.
The board is expected to submit their individual ratings to PSS legal counsel today(Mon). On Thursday, members will convene to discuss their ratings. The board’s decision on whether or not to renew Sablan will be released on August 1st. Discussion around the commissioner’s renewal comes after she sent a letter about her intent to retire in April. But, according to Sablan, she is still willing to serve. “I also indicated on that letter of April 29 that I would be interested to serve them if they still need my service. So I believe that is what is going on right now. They are having that conversation,” said Sablan.
The COE’s term after appointment usually lasts 4 years. Board chairman Herman Guerrero said that in reviewing Sablan’s performance, they will also take into account the goals she presented at the beginning of her term, whether or not they were accomplished, and what new goals have been developed.
