The Guam Memorial Hospital doctors who tested positive for COVID-19 only had mild symptoms, according to Dr. Hoa Nguyen, the chairman of Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero’s Physicians Advisory Group.

According to Dr. Nguyen, the two doctors who returned from India, where the virus is currently surging, were already vaccinated which is why they exhibited only mild symptoms.

“They are fully vaccinated. And you know, the vaccine works. Both of them had only very mild symptoms during the last few days,” Dr. Nguyen said during an interview with NewsTalk K57’s Patti Arroyo.

However, Dr. Nguyen said the fact that the doctors still got the virus despite getting vaccinated should remind people that getting vaccinated doesn’t mean that one is totally immune from the virus.

“You can still get it. But if you get it, the symptoms will be much, much less and you won’t be in a hospital or you may not even need to be admitted,” Dr. Nguyen said.

He added that the two GMH doctors, who are a married couple, recognized their symptoms very early, got tested, and immediately isolated themselves.

Contact tracing was immediately followed and Dr. Nguyen said no positive COVID cases have resulted so far from the two doctors’ contacts.
