Guam – The Orange Crushers have a chance to take sole possession of first place in the Bud Light Women’s Soccer League this weekend if they are able to defeat the sixth-ranked Guam Shipyard team at the Guam Football Association facility in Harmon.
Fortunately for the Orange Crushers, they were able to slip past the dck Masters 2-1, while Hyundai battled to a scoreless draw against the Paintco Lady Strykers, putting the second-place team just one point below the league leaders, who have a bye this weekend.
The Lady Strykers, the league’s fifth-ranked team, were able to jam Hyundai’s triggers in the early afternoon match last Sunday, frustrating league-leading scorers Olivia Flores and Arisa Recella.
For the past few weeks, the Crushers have been in second place based on ranking points behind Hyundai. Although both teams are undefeated, the Crushers had an early bye in the third week of play, playing one less game than Hyundai.
The Lady Strykers’ defense was able to prevent any Hyundai goals from three penalty kick chances and also limited the league leaders to five shots on goal in the 90-minute match. Hyundai also had opportunities to convert three corner kicks in the match, but were again denied by Paintco.
The Lady Strykers also had opportunities during the match, including late in the second half on a penalty kick. After Hyundai situated themselves for the Lady Strykers’ shot, Alexy Barbe instead passed the ball to Caroline Quigley, whose shot sailed over the crossbar.
With the draw, both teams earned one point to their totals for the league standings.
Later in the day, Quality Distributors picked up their third win, a 5-1 victory over Guahan.com. Quality was led by Nieves Cabreza’s hat trick and teammate Philana Lopez and Raquel Walker added one goal each. Guahan.com’s lone goal came from Honoko Recella.
In the Crushers/dck match up, Abbey Iriarte scored one goal for the Crushers and teammate Kristin Thompson scored the team’s other goal off a penalty kick. The Masters’ goal came off the foot of Cheri Stewart on a penalty kick.
