Diaper drive seeks to help struggling families

A local business owner wants to help families who are struggling during the pandemic by organizing a diaper and formula drive-thru that will be held Sunday, September 13.

As the owner of ‘The Giving Tree,’ Maelonie Tamondong, has been in the business of taking care of babies and toddlers for years. But because of the lockdown, she was not recognized as an essential business and was forced to close her business temporarily.

Maelonie said ‘The Giving Tree’s’ mission is to help families with young children. She wants to concentrate on helping the babies in the community.

“Families have lost jobs but babies still need to eat and we want to help the families that need it the most,” she said.

Her group has collaborated with Calvary Chapel and the Safe Haven non-profit organization to distribute donations to the community. They are looking to distribute items on Saturday September 19.

“We did a drive earlier in the year. We were able to get thousands of donations — food and personal hygiene products. We were able to do that and I was thinking if we could do that again and do it for formula and diapers. Then we can help those families right now who are struggling to buy the basic necessities for their babies,” Tamondong said.

The drive-thru formula drive is from 11 to 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Lotte Hotel Island Wing Lobby. If you are interested in making a monetary donation thru Paypal to go towards the purchase of diapers and formula donating diapers, formula, wipes, and cash, give Maelonie a call at 488-4997.

The organizers of the event are also reminding the community to please wear a mask and social distance when making your donations.
