Guam- The Guam Department of Education has some before it a budget for Fiscal Year 2012 needs to be submitted to the legislature.
By statute the budget needed to be submitted by January 30th but DOE officials were not able to get the budget approved by the Guam Education Board. While DOE Superintendent Dr. Nerissa Underwood was unable to comment on the budget extension today, Chief Education Advisor for the Governor’s Office Vince Leon Guerrero says DOE would not have been able to submit the budget by the deadline without breaking laws.
Following a GDOE Financial Supervisory Committe meeting this afternoon, Leon Guerrero explained that the deadline required DOE to submit the budget before the appointed members of the Guam Education Board were confirmed.
“Without a quorum they wouldn’t be able to get it approved.” Leon Guerrero said.
The Legislature’s Education Committee is expected to hold a confirmation hearing on the appointed members for the GEB as soon as Speaker Judi Won Pat’s office receives all of the appointment packets.
Last week Dr. Underwood told PNC that she expects DOE to request $288 Million from the legislature for Fiscal Year 2012.
