Guam – Department of Education Superintendent Jon Fernandez is asking for an update on the lease agreement for the Tiyan campus currently being used as a temporary campus for Untalan Middle School.
In a letter to Governor Eddie Calvo Tuesday night Fernandez reiterated DOE’s desire to use the space to open a Central High School once UMS moves back to its Barrigada campus.
“As we are all aware, there are over 2,600 students that attend George Washington High School (“GWHS”) and the opening of a new high school campus will help us to reduce that number and promote a safer learning environment.” Fernandez wrote. “It is an idea that has been welcomed by many GWHS teachers, parents and students, and I am hopeful that we can meet the commitment made earlier this year.”
The Superintendent also mentioned the committment made by the Governor and the Attorney General to address the portions of the lease agreement that pertain to Guahan Academy Charter School by December 31st. GACS had been threatened with eviction unless a lease agreement for the two buildings used for their campus is finalized. Governor’s Spokesman Phillip Leon Guerrero last week told PNC that the buildings used by GACS are being worked into the new lease agreement with CoreTEch which also exercises the lease to own option.
