Guam – The 6th Guam Education Board (“GEB”) elected their leadership positions at the regular meeting on January 21.

Chosen by a majority of voting members present, Dr. Jose Cruz and Mrs. Maria Gutierrez were selected as the Chair and Vice-Chair respectively.

Cruz will be returning to the position of Chair for a second consecutive term and is the longest continuous serving GEB Member since being elected in November of 2004. “It is an honor to be selected by my colleagues to return as Chair for a second consecutive term,” said Cruz.

“We will continue to work with Superintendent Fernandez and our community stakeholders as we move GDOE forward.”

Gutierrez is no stranger to serving on school Boards having served on both the Territorial Board of Education (“TBOE”) and GEB. Her time on the TBOE was also spent as the Vice-Chair for that body as well.

“I am humbled by the support of the members of the Board,” said Gutierrez. “I look forward to taking on this responsibility and working closely with both Dr. Cruz and the Superintendent.”
