Guam – New leadership is taking over at Southern High School effective Monday, October 22.  Department of Education Superintendent Jon Fernandez Announced the changes to teachers today, saying its part of a push to accelerate improvements at the school.

Under the changes J.P. Torres Alternative School Principal Rosalin Meeks will become the new principal at Southern High, current Principal James  Petitte will be moved Agueda Johnston Middle School.

Also coming to Southern as Assistant Principals are: Geraldine Pablo of PC Lujan Elementary School, Trisha San Miguel of Agueda Johnston Middle School, Gaylene Cruz of George Washington High School and Raymond Mantanona of DOE’s Curriculum and Instruction Division.

According to Fernandez the entire Southern High administrative team will be moved to other schools except for Assistant Principal Kin Fernandez who was moved to the central office last month after being arrested on family violence and harassment charges. Superintendent Fernandez did not say what action would be taken with Kin Fernandez.

Superintendent Fernandez says the change in leadership is a proactive approach in preparing the school for its accreditation review next year.

“I want to thank the current team for helping bring Southern High School to this point,” Fernandez said in a press release.  “It is now a good time to incorporate new energy and ideas to Southern during these challenging but exciting times.”

Fernandez says the current administrative team did a good job getting the school to the point it’s currently at but believes the team is fatigued from the on-going maintenance and facility problems the school has had for the last several years.

An Education Resource Team is also being appointed to the school to determine what goals and objectives the school should work on to improve education at Southern High School.
