Micronesia Climate Change Alliance (MCCA) has announced the official digital launch of FANGGÁI’ASE’ – Compassionate Eating and Conscious Living, a plant based cookbook and guide for the Marianas.
Fanngai’ase in CHamoru means to be compassionate, a plant based or vegan lifestyle is more conscious of the impacts on animals and the environment.
MCCA says in a news release that they adapted many local comfort foods like kelaguen, tinaktak , and lumpia into plant based recipes. They encourage readers to use this book as a resource on where to find locally grown, sustainable produce instead.
The book was a labor of love says MCCA and it was designed to help more people in our community to shop and eat mindfully, prioritizing the health of our bodies and the Earth.
There were fifteen contributors to the book making an all-star team of local women chefs, teachers, artists, nutritionists, farmers and more through 50 locally-sourced vegan/vegetarian recipes, adapted from traditional Chamoru, Filipino culture.
Tips on being a more planet-conscious consumer and growing and using traditional produce accompany a shopping guide for vegans to local restaurants and stores, enhancing life on the islands one reader at a time.
The creation of this book was made possible from a generous grant from the Climate
Justice Alliance (CJA) and their Story Snapshot project. CJA featured the book on their
website and their podcast (see the link below).
MCCA also produced a 1 minute commercial for the book also linked below.
A printed version will be released at the end of the summer and will be sold exclusively at Payless Supermarkets.
