FEMA Team On-Island To Provide Disaster Response Training

Guam – A team from the FEMA Headquarters in Washington D.C. is on island this week to provide disaster response training for the Guam Department of Civil Defense.

Mass Care Instructor Peggy Mott arrived last week to provide training to school administrators on how to run a shelter. Many of Guam’s schools are used for shelter in the event of a typhoon because they are concrete and most have generators.

Mott says the sheltering training helped school administrators learn how to handle the many responsibilities that come with running a shelter.

“They have to look at the sheltering, the feeding, the logistical needs, supplies, if there are service animals,” Mott said. “There is a lot more to it than there used to be many years ago.”

Mott says this weeks training is geared toward Guam Civil Defense and the local Red Cross chapter.  The training will cover the full mass care program under FEMA including assistance, volunteer management and logistics.
