Four individuals — each an expert in their own field — will represent Guam in the 13th Festival of Pacific Arts scheduled for June 2020 in Hawaii.
This morning, the Guam FestPac planning committee and the Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities Agency held a press conference to announce the names of the four committee chairs. The list includes Dr. Judy Flores, who chairs visual, floral, and other forms of art; Eileen Meno, the performing arts chair, and; Maria Barcinas, the special events and activities chair. Dr. Michael Bevacqua, the literary arts chair, oversees publications and indigenous languages.
Bevacqua shares with PNC his plans for the upcoming festival.
“Something that I am excited about is indigenous languages. So in 2016, when we had our first FestPac here, we had our first indigenous language conference as part of it. So I was the co-chair of that conference. I am hoping that we could continue that momentum in Hawaii next year,” Bevacqua said.
He added: “FestPac is kind of, one of the most exciting times in the Pacific, because we think of ourselves as being spread out across the oceans…and so on…divided by colonizers, cultures, and languages, and FestPac is where everybody can come together and share what is exciting about their culture.”
The chairpersons were selected based on mastery, experience, as well as impact and contributions to the community.
